Head of Community Safety, Security and Emergency Planning

£54,420 to £63,069 per annum + substantial benefits (with potential progression once in post to £82,225)

Our heritage as the UK’s original ‘redbrick’ and civic university, is combined with one of the most compelling and ambitious agendas in higher education. Quite simply, at Birmingham we make things happen. Home to world-class researchers whose work on everything from new cancer treatments to harnessing the power of atoms for future energy sources, makes a real difference to people’s lives – we provide innovative solutions to big problems. We think, recruit and compete worldwide. Our stunning, 300-acre Edgbaston campus is iconic.

Campus Services (CS) employs over 900 staff with a turnover exceeding £50m in the last financial year. We play a key role in the quality of the student, staff, and visitor experience. CS is a highly commercial organisation operating within the University context and has an ambitious strategic agenda, in terms of growing our service profile across both our Birmingham and Dubai campuses.

The role of Community Safety and Security Services is to keep the University of Birmingham community, including all visitors, safe and to enable the smooth operation of University business in all circumstances, whenever and wherever needed. We foster a culture of safety and security being everyone’s responsibility, with a focus on our students. We are here to help and have an ambitious programme to modernise to enhance safety so our community can thrive. The post-holder is responsible for the strategic management, leadership and development of the Community Safety and Security teams, alongside leading on Emergency Planning for the University. This service needs to be resilient and available to the University community and its partners, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This role would suit individuals with a track record in creating a culture of exceptional delivery. Strong communication skills will be essential as the role includes extensive partnerships with our neighbours as well as external bodies such as our NHS partners.
