What do you do at MRG?
I resource for the Bids team; finding the best possible talent to fill our client’s roles.
How did you get into recruitment, and why?
I have known my manager, Daniel Higgins, for several years now and back in 2019 I had mentioned to him how I was looking for a change of career, away from accounts. I wanted to try something new, however when Covid hit in 2020 I decided I best stick with what I knew.
Fast forward 2(ish) years – my accounting career was coming to an end as I had booked a 1-way ticket to Portugal, with the intention to travel and teach. However, Dan put a stop to that when he called me in late 2021 and asked me to come in and have a chat with some of the directors about a possible job opportunity. I’m always one for a chat, so decided I had nothing to lose; next thing I knew I had a return ticket from Portugal and a start date.
Why recruitment? It is truly meritocratic. Truth be told, I love it and wish I got into it sooner!
What are you looking forward to about working in recruitment?
The conversation! I love to talk to people, love to have a conversation and especially within the scope of Bids the conversation is different every day. I find it truly fascinating working within a career that enables me to work with and engage with such a plethora of different people from all walks of life. The story is ever changing!
What are you most proud about that you have achieved in your career to date?
It has to be getting my first placement 5 weeks into my recruitment career, having never done recruitment before.
What energises you about working in this sector?
No two days are the same, especially within the scope of the Bids sector. The variety is truly fascinating and the conversations with potential candidates and clients vary day to day.
What’s the biggest thing that’s changed in recruitment since you started?
Luckily not too much yet, I’m sure after a few years in the industry I’ll have something to write here.
What do you think the biggest misconception people have about you is?
That I’m very extroverted, when I’m actually a mixture of introvert and extrovert. I love reading and having a quiet weekend by myself as much as going to the pub and socialising.
What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?
That I absolutely love long distance touring cycling. Me and my two best friends organised a 240 mile cycle from London to Paris in 2018, and raised over £4,000 for Cancer Research (the photo at the top of this article was us at the end).
What’s the best advice anyone has every given you?
“Cooler heads prevail.”
What three words would your colleagues use to describe you?
Focused, witty and competitive.
And finally, who would play you in the movie about your life?
Michael B. Jordan
